Gregor Barratt’s works are instruments: devices built to make visible what escapes the eye. Moving between sculpture, installation, analogue photography and instrument-making, his practice runs along two axes. One is scale, from the microscopic to the monumental. The other is time, from a flash of light to slow decay. Burnt film examined under a microscope, an icosahedron of two-way mirrors, a steel sculpture in Epping Forest: each piece is as much a tool for observation as an object to be looked at. For ten years, Barratt has shaped his work around a tension he calls MC and GC. The first stands for feeling, body and intuition. The second stands for structure, geometry and the instrument. His instruments measure nothing; they make us see.
